A rocket stage returning to land upright, or electric cars becoming an everyday sight: Sundar Pichai also looks at such achievements with admiration. The Google chief praises Elon Musk’s ability to get technology built that once seemed far in the future.
Pichai made the remarks in May 2025 on the All-In Podcast. The clip is circulating again. His compliment concerns the step from an idea to working engineering: imagining something and getting an organisation to deliver it are different challenges.
A rocket that brings back a major component
SpaceX’s Falcon 9 illustrates the appeal. After stage separation, the lower stage can return, slow down and land. That major component does not have to be discarded after every launch.
A landing is a chain of precisely timed actions: controlling attitude, restarting engines and reducing speed almost to zero above the landing site. The spectacle is the visible endpoint of control systems, propulsion and extensive testing.
An invention also needs a factory
Tesla presents a different scaling challenge. A working electric car is only a start. Selling many of them also requires batteries, production lines, servicing and charging. Bringing those pieces together makes technology part of daily life.
That is the interesting layer beneath Pichai’s praise. It is about organising people, money and engineering around a difficult goal, rather than a single brilliant thought. The result must leave the drawing board and survive repeated use or large-scale production.
Admiration between competitors
The compliment is striking because their businesses also overlap. Google develops Gemini while Musk’s xAI competes in AI. Tesla also works on autonomous driving and humanoid robots. Respect for engineering can coexist with commercial rivalry.
The remark is not a prediction that every future Musk project will succeed. Pichai admires an ability he recognises in previous results. The broader idea is compelling: technology changes the world when someone makes it work outside the demonstration room.
